This hour-long documentary from the This World series (27th April 2006) looked into the conduct of clinical trials in India. For pharmaceutical companies the approach has many benefits – a quicker and cheaper outcome, with populations lacking prior exposure to related medicines (“treatment naive”). The patients in the trial described receive no financial benefit, so why do they volunteer? Consent forms are frequently signed with a thumb print (an indication that the participants did not know what they were volunteering for).
