How do I make clips?

One of the great things about Box of Broadcasts is the capacity to make clips of exactly the section or sections you want from a programme. This functionality works in a completely different way in shiny new BoB compared with the earlier version. We have not yet had the opportunity to write a post on the new method, but hope to do so in the near future. In the meantime, please contact us if you would like some specific advice.

To make clips you need to start with the original BoB file for the episode. It is policy for Biologyonthebox to link primarily to a clipped file, in which any material before and after a programme is removed (along with any adverts, where applicable). Therefore if you want to make any new clips in addition to ones we’ve already offered then you will need to start by clicking the “full programme” link bottom left.

The default on this site is to link to a pre-clipped file. To make a new clip, you will need to go back to the original file by clicking "Full programme"

To find the correct point in the episode you can search the transcript for relevant dialogue or, if it is a newer recording you could use the frames facility. You can, of course, just watch through and start and stop the clip in real time. Be warned, however, that you will “time out” of BoB after a while (e.g. if you start watching an hours programme and then try to make a short clip of a section late in the episode) and if you do then any clip you were making will be lost (as some of us have discovered the hard way!)

You can link more than one clip from the same episode (for example if you are removing the adverts), provided that the clips are in their original sequence. If you want to use two pieces of the same programme, but not in their original order, then you will need to make two separate files.

You also need to be aware that any new clip counts as one of your “five a day” allowance for ordering recording. For standard users there is a maximum of five new programme orders and/or new clips per day.
